I liked the restaurant with the view of the Pearl river. The free food was the best of all the hotels I'd stayed in so far in China. Has a good selection of "American" food and chinese breakfast items. I'm chinese-american so I ate a lot of both. The rooms of the same price are varied. I shared one with my husband that was tiny and out the window was the view of a wall. Then I visited my sister's room and she had a nice sized room with a view of the river. Not fair! Sibling rivalry!
The only big complain though is the safe. We tried to use it, but the codes would reset themselves and then alarm if we tried to get in more than three times. But you could stop the alarm and then open the safe with the cancellation code (given in the instructions). So basically it's not a safe-safe. Use the fron desk safe instead for your passports. They have an armed guard

we booked the deluxe river view room with breakfast at US$86 (steep when converted to South African Rands). having read other reviews we felt we should pay more and get a better room. the room was more like a 3 star than 4 star room; dated furnishings,old bathroom.The redeeming factors were the gorgeous river and skyline views, being high up on floor 28, and the comforts of bath robes and good service.
the breakfast was adequate with a good variety of choices and even more spectacular views as the buffet is at the 39th floor restaurant.
the location was exceptionally good as the hotel is on haizhu square, which is about a 200m walk to the mtr and taxis are always available. there are 2 banks below the hotel so changing currency is easy. we enjoyed strolls in the haizhu square park across the hotel which buzzes with activity; tai chi, people taking their exercise, enchanting live performances of Chinese music. We also walked from our hotel to Beijing Lu (about 1.5km away).
I would probably stay elsewhere next time, not because of a bad experience, but to get more value for money. it was a satisfactory experience.
