The Reviews of Riverside Hotel
abdol :
Very nice hotel, located on the Pearl River, very close to the cruises. The peolpe at the Reseption, the bell boys and eveyone at the hotel are very friendly and helpful. They have live music in the lobby at night though i never had the time to check it out. There is a small supermarket jst across the street. The hotel is 10 mins or less away from the main shopping street ( Beijin Rd.).There are a few nice night clubs a couple of blockes away. The down side is that the nearest metro station is almost 20 mins away, but u would always find a taxi waiting outside the hotel. The room i stayed in was spacious with an actual king size bed, usually in china you would only find queen size, also a bathtub and hot water on all the time. There are a couple of nice resturants but cuz i was there on bussiness i never had the time to try them out. We got the room for $41 US in Febuary but i think during the season (when they have the fair in April) it would go for much more. I would Definitely stay there again.
China_Troll :
This was my first venture to China, specifically for the Canton Trade Fair. Along with another work colleague we were innocents in regard to what to expect and our first mistake was being dragged around a corner at the airport for a 'special' taxi fair. Be careful when organizing transport in China and preferably have a business card or other info written in Mandarin for the purpose of directions to the hotel. Having said that, we did eventually get to the Riverside Hotel after 2 initial stops at wrong venues. The hotel was all geared up for foreign business delegates and the room rates literally treble the normal rate during these periods.
The hotel itself is positioned perfectly for both trade pavilions [free shuttle buses leave from 7am onwards as do all the major hotels] and walking distance to excellent eateries along the river. It is also close Old Beijing Road...the hub of counterfeit 'anything' and of excellent qaulity, in particular sunglasses [even had a repair shop fix a screw back in Melbourne and they couldn't tell the diff!].
The rooms are quite expansive and far larger than I expected or needed. Two double beds for one person and an enormous bathroom connected via a long corridor. A knock on the door 3 hours after arriving saw a fresh plate of excellent fresh fruit supplied plus a souvenir thingy.
All in all you couldn't fault it apart from a slight tv remote issue and windows that open [from the 14th floor!!!]. Breakfast included and appealing to all nationalities and courtesy effecient staff to boot.

The hotel is located right on the Pearl River. It is a quite a large hotel. Was first impression was of stale smoke, which was a little off putting. The rooms are very large, two double beds. A little outdated though, I got the feeling it needed a bit of an update. The bathroom was fine, clean, what I would expect from a Chinese hotel. However our toilet was broken and didnt flush. The maintenence people tried to fix it twice but couldnt. They also couldnt communicate with us as spoke no english. We werent able to change rooms.
Staff were very friendly. Had breakfast in the restaurant, which catered to many nationalities needs.
Wee were often reminded to "look after your posessions" as petty crime is a problem in the area.

the riverside hotel is old, a bit worn out, but for the money is good. about $100 aud / night.
its on the river, is close to Beijing road, the main shopping place, and Haizu square, the closest metro.
rooms are a bit tired, dark, but the base room is still large, king size bed, big bathroom, with separate shower, bath.. two of us can shower together ok. bed is hard, but comfortable, linen is clean, changed daily, and has big tv, and free internet .its a chinese hotel though, not for anyone who doesnt know some chinese i think. restaurant menus are all in chinese, i had a coffee in the lounge, that cost 37 rmb,, thats alot for china, when you can get a macdonalds meal, chips, coke and burger for 18 rmb.
only cnn, and one movie channel in english, no real lounge area if you just want to read a book.
its close to restaurants,, with one very good one accross the road, aunties,.. a nice bakery type shop downstairs with rolls etc for 3.5 rmb. bank next door for currency exchange.. overall very nice for the price.. half the price of the china hotel,, but nice anyway. about 3.5 stars i think
